Businesses and organizations are facing an increasingly complex and rapidly changing environment. One of the consequences of this change is that there is an increasing need for projects that deliver answers to complex, one-off issues that need to be dealt with outside of the day-to-day organizational structures.
Such projects can be externally or internally focused (develop a new service vs. improving internal processes), strategic or operational (develop a new strategy for a market segment vs. streamlining a process in a factory), or short-term or long-term (develop an immediate response to a competitor action vs. plan and monitor the roll-out of a new technology).
A common factor among all such projects is that the sponsors are more often than not unhappy with the results.
